MacBook Air (Intel)
Older Intel MacBook Airs are still worth repairing: a new battery and SSD often give them years more use. The Retina models from 2018 onwards charge over USB-C rather than MagSafe.
MacBook Air (Apple silicon)
Apple silicon Airs have no fan, so overheating is rare, but the thin display panel cracks easily if something is trapped when the lid closes. Storage is soldered to the logic board, so recovering files from a dead board needs board-level work.
MacBook Pro 13-inch (Intel)
The 2016 to 2019 models use the butterfly keyboard, which is prone to sticking and repeating keys, and some 2016 and 2017 models suffer from a worn display cable that causes stage-light patterns or a dead backlight.
MacBook Pro 15 and 16-inch (Intel)
The larger Intel MacBook Pros run hot under load, so fan cleaning and fresh thermal paste make a real difference. Some models with dedicated graphics are known for graphics chip faults that show up as lines or no display.
MacBook Pro (Apple silicon)
The 14 and 16-inch models brought back MagSafe charging alongside USB-C, and use mini-LED screens that are expensive, so an accurate diagnosis before replacing the panel matters. Storage is soldered, so keep a backup.

MacBook 12-inch
The 12-inch MacBook has a single USB-C port for charging and data, so a damaged port leaves the whole machine unusable until it is fixed.
iMac (Intel)
Many Intel iMacs shipped with slow spinning hard drives or Fusion Drives. Replacing them with an SSD is the single biggest speed-up these machines can get.
iMac (Apple silicon)
The 24-inch iMac is very thin, with its power supply in the external adapter. Storage is soldered to the board, so keep a backup and bring it in quickly if it stops starting up.
Mac mini
The Mac mini is small and quiet, but dust can still build up in its cooling. Its storage is soldered to the board, so data recovery from a failed Mac mini means repairing the board.
