A short history of Brixton
Brixton grew with the railways in the 19th century, and Electric Avenue was one of the first shopping streets to be lit by electricity, in the 1880s. After 1948 Brixton became home to many of the Windrush generation, and Brixton Market remains at the heart of the area.
