If you still use a Windows 10 laptop or PC, there is good news: Microsoft has given home users another year of security updates. Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 now run until 12 October 2027, instead of ending in October 2026.
What changed
Normal support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025. Since then, home users have only received security fixes by joining Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates programme. In June 2026 Microsoft quietly updated its ESU pages to say the programme now runs to 12 October 2027. If you are already enrolled, you don’t need to do anything: your cover carries on automatically.
How to get the updates if you haven’t yet
You can still enrol at any time before the programme ends. Your PC needs to be on Windows 10 version 22H2 with the latest updates installed, and you sign in with a Microsoft account. There are three ways to enrol:
- Free: turn on Windows Backup to sync your PC settings to your Microsoft account.
- Free: redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- Paid: a one-off payment of $30, or the local equivalent plus tax.
One ESU licence covers up to 10 PCs on the same Microsoft account. Look for the enrolment option under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Repair or upgrade, not replace
An extra year of updates is a good reason to keep a Windows 10 machine going rather than replacing it now, while new laptops are more expensive because of rising memory and storage prices. A few things can make an older computer feel much quicker and more reliable:
- An SSD and memory upgrade can make an older computer feel new again.
- A new battery or charging port fixes the most common reasons a laptop gets left in a drawer.
- A virus and malware clean-up removes pop-ups and slowdowns, with your files kept safe.
