Why hinges break
Hinges get tighter or looser with age, and on many plastic laptops the mounting points are the weak spot. Each time the lid opens, a stiff hinge pulls on the mount until the case cracks.
Fix it early
If you notice a creak, a gap opening near the hinge or a stiff lid, bring it in. A hinge caught early is a smaller repair than a hinge that has cracked the case and damaged the screen cable.
