A short history of Penge
Penge’s name is thought to come from Celtic words meaning the edge of the wood, from the Great North Wood that once covered the area. The Royal Watermen’s Almshouses were built in the 1840s for retired Thames watermen, and the arrival of the Crystal Palace next door in 1854 turned Penge into a busy Victorian suburb.
