A short history
Southwark is one of the oldest parts of London, growing up at the southern end of London Bridge since Roman times. Borough Market’s roots go back to the medieval period, and Bankside was home to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, built in 1599. The borough was formed in 1965 from Southwark, Bermondsey and Camberwell, and our workshop sits on its Bermondsey side.
