A short history of Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf takes its name from a quay in the West India Docks that handled fruit from the Canary Islands. After the docks closed, the area was redeveloped from the late 1980s, and One Canada Square opened in 1991 as the tallest building in Britain at the time.
