A short history of Shirley
Shirley grew from a small Surrey hamlet into a suburb of Croydon in the 1920s and 1930s. Shirley Windmill, built in 1854 after an earlier mill burned down, still stands and opens to visitors. John Ruskin’s parents are buried in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist, and the Addington Hills nearby give some of the best views across London.
